Wai Yuen Tong is a century old company that develops products based on Chinese medicine and ancient formulas passed down from generation to generation. Aside from having traditional Chinese medicine shops all over Hong Kong, Wai Yuen Tong also makes packaged products so that people from all over the world can enjoy their offerings for healthier living. I frequently purchase Wai Yuen Tong’s herbal jelly snack but on a recent trip to the supermarket, I noticed Wai Yuen Tong launched a new similar product.
I’ll try not to confuse everyone with the benefits of eating herbal jelly. But generally, it’s good for balancing the consumption of too much fried and spicy foods causing a condition of the body called yit hei (熱氣). Some foods that are cooked at high heat form a compound called Acrylamide that cause this condition of the body when consumed. Since the start of summer, I’ve been having way too many barbecues that I always keep some herbal jelly in stock to cool down. Contrary to traditional Chinese medicine, herbal jelly snacks don’t taste bitter!
The new product I found is this herbal jelly beverage in a coffee-like cup. They are priced at $1.99 at my local supermarket. Normally, Wai Yuen Tong’s herbal jelly snack comes with a little packet of liquid sugar that you add to sweeten the taste. But this beverage comes ready-to-indulge so you don’t have to mix anything. It also comes with a straw so it’s very convenient to take with you.
In terms of taste, there’s not much difference between the snack and this beverage version. But because this is a beverage, the herbal jelly was a bit softer than usual making it easy to slurp through a straw. I’d like to think of it as slurping Jell-O, but packs way more nutritional benefits than Jell-O. It also has higher water content so it definitely quenches thirst better than the snack.
Finally, this drink tastes best when chilled. Even if you don’t eat a lot of fried or spicy foods, it’s still great to drink on a hot day. Chances are if you enjoy bubble tea you’ll enjoy this drink.
