The Village Grocer started back in 1986 as a neighbourhood grocery store in Markham.  You know, one where the butcher would call you by your first name and where the bakery lady would ask about your kids.  Despite this generation of superstores and one-stop shops, The Village Grocer aims to keep things homely.  They go as far as making arrangements to bring groceries to your house and offer simple, courteous service that make a big difference.  Quality and homemade foods are their specialty.  I am particularly fond of their cakes, and you will understand why in a bit.

I came home one day to find a box sitting on the kitchen table.  There was a green sticker with the words ‘The Village Grocer’ on the box.  Someone brought cake home from The Village Grocer.  I opened it and found a cake shaped in the form of a Yule log.  My excitement slightly diminished.  I have fears from Yule logs because every Christmas, someone from the family would buy some and year after year, they would be the sweetest, most un-aromatic pieces of trunks that you would want to toss in the fireplace.  In spite of traditions, I’d rather not eat them, at least not those ones.

I took a skeptical bite and to my surprise, it was light, fluffy, not sweet, super fruity, and rich.  This was possibly the best cake I’ve ever tasted from a grocery store, supermarket type thing.  The cream filling appealed to me the most because normally, I find any cream or icing to be too sweet.  I don’t like whipped cream because it’s airy and tasteless.  Well, tastes like sugar for the most part.  But the creamy concoction they used was rich and full of aroma.  I loved it.  And I adored the plentiful fresh fruits too.

I discovered this cake is called a Mixed Fruit Jelly Roll ($15.95) and went back to order it on several occasions, including Christmas, the most recent being last week.  I phoned the store and ordered one for pickup next day, and they had no problems reserving one for me.  It was the star of my dinners.  I would say it feeds about 6-8 people.  And they have lots of other cakes too which I’m likely going to sample one day.  I felt from the Jelly Roll that they put their heart into making their desserts.  People who care and use good quality stuff.  How’s that for your stomach?
