Shinokubo – Tokyo, Japan

Located in the popular Shinjuku district, Shinokubo houses a large Korean community in Tokyo.  As with other Koreatowns in the world, you can expect to find a number of restaurants, grocery stores, and products from Korea.  Say you’ve landed in Tokyo but a part of you wants to feel some Korean vibe.  No problem.  This post will introduce what you can expect to see at Shinokubo’s Koreatown in Tokyo, including a restaurant visit.

Galleria Supermarket New Location in North York

I’m doing my part to create positivity in this heavy time for Koreans in Toronto with this news: Galleria (Korean) Supermarket is expanding!  I admit it might not be the most joyous thing you’ve heard this week but I’m doing what I can, with food (food cures all – heck maybe tensions will ease over some good old food at Kitchen Stadium. If not, battle it out with the secret ingredient kimchi!).  Hence on a lighter note Galleria’s new location opened November 6 in North York while their old location has closed and are moving one block south from their original location in Thornhill.  That means soon enough there will be two Galleria locations to shop from!  I went to Galleria a couple weeks after their grand opening in North York.  Here’s a peek at what to expect.

In Cheon House Korean & Japanese Restaurant

In Cheon House is where Bob Shop was located.  If there’s a place for Korean food outside of both Koreatowns in Toronto, I would say Bob Shop is the place.  But that didn’t last too long.  I drove by recently and saw that it was replaced by In Cheon House.  The sign tells us it’s still Korean food with newly added Japanese items.  My curiosity led me to walk inside.

Binggrae Macchiato Coffee Drink

Occasionally, I would travel to the Korean supermarket in Toronto to do some groceries.  They have a nice selection of seafood, sushi, meat products, bakery, and other interesting Korean snacks.  During my last trip there I picked up some bottled coffee drinks similar to the ones you can find from Starbucks.  But what caught my attention on these drinks was the Drip Coffee label.

What’s For Lunch – Korean Nian Gao Edition

I’m a big fan of Shanghai stir-fried nian gao because I love its glutinous texture and versatility. Normally it’s made with cabbage, carrot, beef or pork and stir-fried with green onion. But it’s also very customizable as you can add your favorite veggies and/or meat. Korean nian gao has much of the same texture and taste, but has a slighty thinner circumference and is usually kept in a rod-shape within Korean dishes. Today, I attempt to slice up Korean nian gao and stir-fry my own variation for lunch.
