Peanut Mochi (or Nuomici) is a dessert that can be found in Chinese bakeries or supermarkets across town. The problem is I’m particularly picky when it comes to peanut mochi. The rice flour can’t be too tough nor too thick, the filling shouldn’t be sparse, the peanut shouldn’t be too coarse nor too fine, to name a few. I have a serious problem I know! But let me tell you this, I found the perfect mochi for me and will describe how awesome it really is as well as where you can find it. Then maybe we can all appreciate how good a mochi should be.
Just look at this thing of beauty. A soft, glutinous, super thin shell covered with coconut bits and an inner core loaded with a crunchy peanut mixture in the perfect ratios. I’ve yet to mention how the toasted peanuts and sesame give off an aroma that my mouth cannot describe, and only the nose can appreciate. I’ll taunt you no further. You can find this peanut mochi at the little bakery stand in Splendid China Mall next to the escalator.
But here’s the thing, there’s another two locations where you can find the same quality goodies. However, they are listed under different, yet very similar, names – Aroma Bakery, Fragrant Bakery, Hang Heung Bakery (行香老鋪 , 行香餅鋪). I don’t even know what each officially go by anymore. To make matters more complicated, I’ve encountered a situation at one particular location where the lady tried to convince me to buy more buns so that I would not get charged ‘tax’, when we all knew there wasn’t supposed to be tax for buying 6 or more buns, which I did yet I was still charged. I mentioned something like this before so I urge shoppers to be careful. This location was at the Brimley Road store. But in terms of the mochi, it’s consistent at all three locations and is priced at $0.80 each. So happy eating!
