Hakone is about 100 km south-west of Tokyo.  Because of its volcanic surroundings, Hakone is a popular location for hot spring resorts.  It is also known for producing a black boiled egg called kuro-tamago that has chemically reacted with sulphuric waters from the valley in Owakudani.  Legend has it that eating one will add seven years to your life, even though, as cliché as I sound, doubt it has been scientifically proven.  And because of its close proximity to Mount Fuji, a boat ride across Hakone’s Lake Ashi can provide stunning views of the mountain.
